Longhair Cats

The popularity of long-haired cats started in the sixteenth century when they are brought to Europe. They were named after the city Angoras (capital of modern Turkey) from where they are believed to have originated. They still exists until today but in a different breed. They have found in different colors and their coats are silkier.

Another variety of cat that is native to Turkey is the Turkish Van, named after Lake Van. They love to swim and play with water. They always come in white color with patches of cream on the head and tail.

The Persian is famous for its bi-coloured coats and pattern. Each variety is named after its coat colour, so the white-coated cat is known as the White Persian or Longhaired White. They have round eyes, broad head, stubby nose and tiny tufted ears.

There are also longhaired cats which are variations of short-haired breeds; the Balinese, Somali, and the Birman.

Some long-haired varieties came from North America among them is the Maine Coon that is relatively big. Another one is the Ragdoll which gets its name from its curious habit of going completely limp when picked up.

These cats require high grooming maintenance, so before you commit yourself to a long-haired cat make sure you have enough budget to sustain their daily grooming needs.
